What is unique about The Piano Studio of Aeri Kim?

Students learn how to express various styles of music with artistic performances.  I give students a comprehensive musical education through theory, aural training, music history, age-appropriate music appreciation, and performing recital and festivals. All of these skills are crucial for developing well-rounded and knowledgeable musicians. I obtained my NCTM certification in 2019.

What is the NCTM?

NCTM stands for Nationally Certified Teacher of Music.  It is a designation given to teachers, who have completed specific performing, teaching, and testing requirements, by the Music Teachers National Association and the Utah Music Teachers Association.  I obtained my NCTM certificate in 2019.

How much am I required to practice?

I believe that consistency and quality - not quantity - are the most important factors when it comes to practicing.  I  encourage students to practice daily in order to  progress and be prepared for every lesson.  During lessons, I notate weekly goals and practice suggestions in the student's  notebook.  We also spend time discussing ways of efficient practice.

Why do I need an acoustic piano?

It is okay to start with Digital piano but I recommend to have the acoustic piano in the long term. Despite technological advancements in recent years, even the best digital pianos are not enough to replicate the wonderful feels and sounds of the real thing!  The good news is that acoustic pianos hold their value better than digital pianos do, so they are usually a worth to invest even with the used ones.  Acoustic pianos should be tuned once or twice a year by a piano technician.  Regular tuning is crucial to the development of the student's  ear so that the student is hearing the proper pitches of each note on the piano.

What events and opportunities does the studio provide for students?

The studio schedules a number of exciting events for private students and their parents each year!

  • ADMTA, TMTA, NMTA events are available throughout the year.
  • Theory Test in February.
  • Studio Recital in May.
  • National Piano Guild Audition in May.

Why is the annual tuition divided into 12 equal monthly payments?

It makes  easier for students/parents to budget since they know what to expect each month.  The annual tuition rate covers much more than just "x" number of private lessons each year - it also includes piano maintenance, recital and events preparation, travel cost for the festivals, professional development for the teacher, and more.  All these things allow me to provide the student with the best musical education I can offer.
